Website Security (Part 1)

So, you have launched your website for the first time. You have spent so much time on it, you put your best effort, you have an amazing team of designers, developers and content creators. With the synchronization of the whole team you have finally put your company’s name on the world of web. Like any other person or organization, you want to make your name up on the web for a specialized criterion but everything can fall apart if you do not concentrate on the security of your website.

What is website security

A website is like any other real-life property, except for the fact is that you can’t touch it or feel it. It can be seen or accessed only online. Like your real-life property, you must have security for your online property, your website. In simple words, website security is the barrier between your website and unwanted people accessing it. Your website security is the reputation of your business. How? Well, here’s an example, just a few days ago, cyclone ‘FANI’ attacked some part of India and Bangladesh. At that time the govt website of the meteorological department of Bangladesh [www.bmd.gov.bd] crashed. Though the govt said it was for a heavy traffic and also was able to restore it within a few hours but it was a headline news for many.

Types of attack

There can be many types of attack to a website. If your website security is vulnerable you can be attacked by one or many of the following. Such as, blacklisting, malwares, DDoS attacks, poor backdoor security, exploits, hacks etc.

Possible damages

If your website is compromised, you might lose some or all of your website data. Now, a website can contain so many confidential and personal information. As the world is getting moving towards web in every possible direction, the chances are, you might lose valuable information to hackers if you don’t have website security. Your website can contain personal information, daily logged in information and also confidential documents of your organization. In 2017, some part of gmail, only 0.05% of all accounts were breached by hackers but that small number was able to put down one and a half million of email accounts. So, it’s possible, even tech giant like google faced such situation and the damage could be catastrophic.

Conclusion

Website security is very important for each and every website around the globe but unfortunately for some, launching the website is the destination rather than protecting it. The website owners or developers don’t bother looking for security before getting attacked. But for a good developer, website security should be the first thing on his to do list after launching it. I will discuss in details about website security in a further post, till then, have a nice day.
