Description

Learning Outcome:

Successful completion of the course will see students gain a proficiency in comprehension and writing skills. They will be aided with a number of study materials, including the use of worksheets, power point presentations, timely homework and mock exams.

Students can expect to learn the “skimming/scanning” method to extract important information from passages. Students can expect to acquire a clear understanding of inferential, factual and sequential questions, alongside vocabulary in context, to better prepare them at passage analysis. Alongside comprehension, students will be taught the basics of directed and creative writing. Starting with brainstorming, the aspects of character and story building will also be taught, to help students develop their writing skills. Furthermore, aside from analysis the concept of synthesis will be touched upon as well. Students will be taught how to form a whole picture of the passage in their minds, and will be taught how to extract subliminal information and underlying meaning from different portions of the passage including introductory, thesis and concluding statements.

In this section you will be asked to choose either or both or all the texts to base your summary according to a required format as instructed by the Examiner. Your applicable format/s may be either of the following types:

  • Speech
  • Report
  • Article

Section-C: COMPOSITION or ESSAY WRITING:                                          30 marks; 60 minutes.

  • Creative Topic: Linked to the Text topics
  • Personal Experience: True or Imaginary

For these above-mentioned topics, a Spider diagram with eight legs where the key elements can be sorted out and short descriptions of each can be provided. However, some candidates do the brainstorming, in varieties of ways, which are also acceptable. Remember that, you do no get any credit for planning, but it gives a good impression to the Examiner about the candidate’s mindset. The Examiner would love to witness the gradual development in the maturity of the essay.

  • Argumentative or Discursive

For such topics, many prefer a Fish-bone pattern, which also has eight bones altogether. To attempt any argumentative type of essays, please remember to mention balanced statements. This is a must part, or else you may end up getting only half of the marks.
